🇺🇸 Important Update for Our U.S. Customers: New U.S. Tariff Rules & How Izu-shop.japan Will Keep Your Orders Smooth

Hello from izu-shop.japan and thank you, as always, for your support!
This post explains big changes to U.S. import rules, what they mean for trading-card buyers, and exactly how we’ll protect your shopping experience. We’ve added plenty of emojis and clear sections so you can skim fast and shop with confidence. 🙌

🔔 What’s changing on August 29, 2025?

Beginning August 29, 2025, the United States will suspend the “de minimis” rule (Section 321) that previously let shipments valued at $800 or less enter duty-free. The suspension was ordered by the U.S. administration and confirmed in widely reported government and carrier guidance.

What that means in plain English:
Small international packages that used to bypass duties may now be taxed when they arrive in the U.S.

For postal shipments (national post services), the U.S. has indicated fixed-amount duties per item—commonly referenced as $80 / $160 / $200 depending on the product’s tariff rate—while non-postal shipments (couriers like FedEx/UPS/DHL) must file formal entries and pay the applicable duties.

Why this is happening: U.S. authorities say the change is aimed at tightening low-value imports and standardizing how duties are collected.

🧾 Quick glossary

  • De minimis (Section 321): The now-suspended rule that allowed duty-free entry up to $800 per shipment into the U.S.

  • DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): The seller prepays duties/taxes/clearance and delivers to the buyer’s door—no surprise bills at delivery.

  • DDU / DAP: The buyer pays duties/taxes when the shipment arrives in the U.S.

U.S. duties are generally assessed at import (when the shipment enters U.S. customs), not when you click “Pay.” That’s why who pays (DDP vs DDU) matters so much. U.S. Department of Homeland Security

🚚 How carriers are handling it (our current operating plan)

  • FedEx: Offering DDP workflows so the shipper can prepay U.S. duties/taxes and complete formal entry. This is aligned with carrier briefings on the global de-minimis suspension.

  • UPS: Also supports DDP-style solutions for formal entries. (Industry practice; details vary by account.)

  • DHL: Many lanes operate DDU/DAP to the U.S. (buyer pays at import).

  • Japan Post (USPS inbound): Postal shipments face the fixed-amount duty tiers above and may experience processing delays as the new rules roll in.

Carriers are still tuning their processes. Short-term delays or surcharges are possible as systems adjust.

✅ Our response: stress-free shopping for U.S. buyers

To keep your experience simple, transparent, and hassle-free, izu-shop.japan is making these changes for U.S. orders:

  1. We will ship U.S. orders primarily via FedEx using DDP.

→ We prepay the applicable U.S. import duties/taxes on your behalf so you don’t get a surprise invoice later. ✋📦

  2. List prices for the U.S. will increase by ~16%.

→ This reflects our estimate of the new duty burden (~15%) across our typical product mix plus the cost of compliance/filing. We’ve priced-in these government charges so you don’t have to deal with them at delivery.

→ Bottom line: The price you see at checkout is designed to be all-in (product + prepaid import costs + tracked shipping). No hidden customs bill later.

  3. Japan Post to the U.S. paused/limited (as needed).

→ Because postal parcels use the fixed-duty tiers and may encounter transition delays, we’re prioritizing FedEx DDP for U.S. orders to avoid confusion.

💳 What won’t change (the good stuff)

🧠 What this means for your order (simple scenarios)

  • I checked out before Aug 29, 2025.
U.S. duties are assessed when the shipment enters the U.S. If your parcel arrives after the effective date, the new rules can still apply. We’ll use FedEx DDP whenever possible to keep you covered. U.S. Department of Homeland Security

  • I’m buying sealed boxes under $800 like before—do I pay more?
Under the suspension, low-value shipments can still be dutiable. We’ve built the expected duty into your price and will prepay via DDP, so your checkout total reflects the reality of the new system.

  • Will I be charged by FedEx after delivery?
Our plan is DDP (we pay). Unless customs reclassifies an item or a state/municipal fee applies outside our control, you shouldn’t receive a separate bill. (If anything unusual occurs, contact us and we’ll help.)

📋 Why we chose FedEx DDP for U.S. buyers

  • Less paperwork for you: We handle the formal entry and prepay duties.

  • Fewer surprises: All-in pricing up front.

  • Speed + reliability: Strong global network and customs clearance tools.

💬 Have questions, or prefer another carrier?

Tell us your preference—we’ll advise honestly on cost, timing, and risk under the new rules. If you must use DHL or postal, we’ll explain potential DDU charges (buyer-paid at import) or postal fixed-duty tiers so you can decide confidently.
